I started painting this artists copy in the halcyon days of lockdown one of 2020. I had a primed but poorly cut piece of MDF in my studio. I borrowed a lenticular greetings card which had an image of Stubb’s “Whistlejacket” on it from my dad.
I spent many happy evenings trying to reproduce the painting. At one point struggling to find the appropriate colours Stubb’s used I mixed all consievable browns using every colour oil paint I had. Which itself took a few days, but time was abundant at that point in history.
I initially started the painting by laying down a backgroud colour that was approx. to Stubb’s.Then using a rudementary scribe I sketched into the wet paint, at the same time removing some of the paint from the lighter areas of whistlejacket. Once complete this layer was left to dry.
